The Promise Scholars Initiative is to prepare all Ontario-Montclair School District (OMSD) students to be successful in a global society by increasing their high school completion rates and college going rates.
Promise Scholars begins by working with 5th grade students and parents through services and activities which provide exposure to, and encouragement for, postsecondary learning experiences. The program follows the students as they progress through the education pipeline from elementary to middle to high school and college.
Promise Scholars is based on the award winning Online to College Program which is an early college awareness, aspirations, and access program at four OMSD elementary schools. Online to college (OTC) received a 2011 Golden Bell Award for improving student outcomes from the California School Boards Association. This statewide award recognizes OTC's work over the last decade in increasing OTC students' college going rate to 54% compared to the county rate of 29%.
While students continue to require the basics of a K-12 education, Promise Scholars will ensure more students have access to higher education and post-secondary technical training so they have the skills to be prepared for the future, for themselves, their families, and their communities. Advanced education and technical skills, means a more prepared workforce, which impacts higher-wage job development in the region. The bottom line is that access to college benefits us all, and this work is a necessary part of preparing our communities for the future.
Promise Scholars is a partnership between OMSD, Chaffey Joint Union High School District, Chaffey Community College, California State University, San Bernardino, and many community partners. Promise Scholars is one of the first universal comprehensive college going programs of its kind in San Bernardino County.
